Roberto Martinez is set to be unveiled as Wigan Athletic’s new manager after Wigan chairman agreed a £2 million compensation deal with his current employers Swansea City. Martinez replaces Steve Bruce who left Wigan to join Sunderland last week. Martinez,35,would become one of the youngest manager in the Premier League. Martinez is a Wigan favorite having played 188 games for them between 1995 and 2001 scoring 17 goals. Martinez is tipped to sign a three year deal worth £1.5 million per year.
Glasgow club Celtic also showed interest in Martinez regarding its managerial post which was vacated by Gordon Strachan. But Martinez has his heart set on managing the club he played for in the nineties. Martinez has achieved considerable success with Swansea – promoting them to the second tier of English football and then nearly missing out on a play-off spot in the last season.
Wigan chairman Dave Whelan is a huge admirer of the Spaniard and has high hopes for him at Wigan.
He is my number one choice but I have not got permission to talk to him – I need permission from the Swansea chairman (Huw Jenkins) before I can even say hello to Roberto. I have great hopes I can get Roberto Martinez back to Wigan but he’s done so well for Swansea and if Swansea refuse permission I’ll have to look elsewhere.
