Arsene Wenger is actively scouting the market to sign a central defender after it was confirmed that Thomas Vermaelen would continue to have a lengthy spell on the sideline. Bordeaux stopper Michael Ciani is said to be on the top of Wenger’s wish-list. The French international was close to joining the Gunners last summer but Wenger decided to opt for Sebastien Squillaci instead. Wenger has renewed his interest in Ciani it seems, as Arsenal’s scouting team was seen in the stands at Stade Velodrome during Bordeaux’s 1-2 loss at the hands of Marseille.
Ciani played two seasons with Lorient before moving to Bordeaux in 2009. Since his move, he has made 36 appearances and scored four times. But there are lingering doubts about Ciani’s ability to adapt to the Premier League. Laurent Koscielny and Sebastien Squillaci are not too well versed with the Premier League and Wenger would be vary to add Ciani to the list.
Wenger would be tempted to go for a defender having prior experience of playing in the Premier League. Reports suggest that Wenger has made inquiries about the availability of Villa defender Richard Dunne till the end of the season.
