Michael Owen is speculated to be on the brink of joining Manchester United in a sensational pay-as-you-play deal with a one-year contract. The 29-year old England international did not return to training with the Magpies after his deal ran out in June and was actively looking for a new club in the Premier League. Michael Owen is supposed to have sent out a 32-page booklet to Premier League teams urging them to sign him. Manchester United have refused to comment on this growing speculation.
His contract with United would be based on a strict medical examination and would have a very low fixed salary component. But astronomically high performance bonuses would make his salary close to £110,000 that he earned at Newcastle United. Owen had massive injury troubles on his return from Spain and managed just 10 goals last season in all competitions – the last being against West Ham United in January.
There has been interest from Aston Villa and Everton, while Hull City manager Phil Brown has made public his wish to lure Owen to the KC Stadium. But a move to Old Trafford would be ideal for a push to get into Fabio Capello’s World Cup squad. Reports suggest that the medical could be conducted as early as Friday and Owen could be a United player next week.
This one is surely a bolt from the blue !
