Addicks sign midfielder

Charlton Athletic have officially announced the signing of midfielder Luke Berry on a free transfer. The 31-year-old leaves Luton Town after a seven-year-stint with the Hatters. He has put pen to paper a two-year deal with the Addicks, with the option of an extra year also built into the contract.

Berry started his youth career with Cambridge United and was with them till 2014 before joining Barnsley. He however lasted only one season at Oakwell before moving back to Cambridge in 2015.

The midfielder joined Luton in the summer of 2017 when they were in League Two. He was part of the Hatters team that achieved back-to-back promotions- first to League One in 2018, and then to the Championship in 2019.

Luton were in the Championship for four seasons before finally achieving promotion to the Premier League. Berry made 17 appearances for them in the top flight last season, and also achieved the rare distinction of becoming the first Hatters player to score in all four professional divisions of English football.

Luton were relegated from the Premier League last month and the club chose not to extend Berry’s contract. Charlton currently play in League One- they finished 16th last season
