German Bundesliga champions VFL Wolfsburg have completed the signing of Algerian midfielder Karim Ziani from Olympique Marseille for a fee of 7 million euros.
Ziani, who joined Marseille from Sochaux in 2007 for $11m, had reportedly been told by new Marseille boss Didier Deschamps that he did not figure in his plans for the upcoming season. Ziani also had a rocky relationship with Deschamps’ predecessor Eric Gerets. Marseille finished second in Ligue 1 last year, behind Bordeaux and ahead of defending champions Olympique Lyon.
Ziani has played all his football in France. He started his career with RC Paris, and moved to Troyes at the age of 18. In 2004, he was loaned out to Lorient- a move that eventually became permanent. In the summer of 2006, he was reunited with Alain Perrin at Sochaux, before moving to Marseille the next season.
Ziani will wear the No.15 shirt for Wolfsburg- the same that he dons for the Algerian national football team.
