Vieira in talks with Birmingham

Former Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira could be on his way to Premier League newcomers Birmingham. Officials from the Midlands club have met with the French international to discuss terms of a deal. Birmingham have a long standing interest in the star and chairman David Gold has admitted a deal “is not dead”.

Vieira could be offered a two year deal at St Andrews, as he tries to gain regular first team football to ensure he’s in his national team at next years World Cup.

He told skysports.com: “I have a year left on my contract with Inter.

“I want to play week-in week-out to prepare well for the World Cup in South Africa.

“I will definitely know about my future very soon.”

French club Paris St Germain are also said to be in the running for the 33 year old midfielder, but its believed that he would prefer a return to the Premier League. Vieira enjoyed the best years of his career in a silverware-laden nine year spell at Arsenal. That spell included playing a part in Arsenals record breaking 49 game unbeaten run in season 2004/05.

City have also secured the signature of Lee Bowyer on a free transfer from West Ham. The midfielder spent the second half of last season at St Andrews and now the 32 thirty two year old has returned on a two year permanent deal.
