Preston North End have officially confirmed the signing of defender Lewis Gibson from fellow Championship outfit Plymouth Argyle. The exact transfer fee was not revealed, but is said to be a seven-figure sum. Gibson has signed a three-and-a-half-year contract and will wear the No.19 jersey at Deepdale.
Gibson is a Newcastle youth product and came through the ranks at St.James Park before moving to Everton. He had several spells on loan, with the Toffees sending him out to Fleetwood, Reading, Sheffield Wednesday and Bristol Rovers.
The young defender eventually left Goodison Park without making a single first-team appearance and joined Argyle in the summer of 2023. He made 63 appearances for Plymouth- 44 last season and 19 this campaign.
Gibson is a former England youth international and was part of the U17 squad that won the World Cup in India in 2017. The likes of Hull City and Stoke were also reportedly interested in his signature, but it was Preston who eventually won the race.
The 24-year-old is expected to make his PNE bow in their FA Cup game against Charlton next week. Preston are currently 16th in the Championship and Gibson is their first signing of the winter transfer window.
