German Bundesliga side Hamburger SV have snapped up Swedish striker Marcus Berg from Groningen. The fee for the 22 year old was not revealed, but Hamburg did announce that Berg had joined on a five year contract.
Berg joined Groningen in 2007 from Goteburg for a reported £2.5m. He scored 44 times in 69 appearances for Groningen. Groningen revealed that it was the highest transfer fee ever received for a Groningen player, and Dutch newspaper report the fee is somewhere in the range of 10 million euros.
Berg was also part of the Swedish team that lost to England in the semifinals of the recently concluded UEFA U-21 European Championships. He scored seven times in the tournament to finish as its top scorer, and was also named Player of the Tournament.
