According to reports, Liverpool are in advanced talks to bring young French defender Ibrahima Konate to Anfield in the summer. The 21-year-old, widely regarded as one of the best young centre-backs in Europe currently, plies his trade for Leipzig and Liverpool are said to be willing to meet his release clause, rumoured to be around the 40m euro mark.
Liverpool have had a horror season with regard to injuries, especially in central defence, and have gone from topping the league table to sliding out of even the European spots, with the likes of West Ham ahead of them in the standings.
A potential worry for Liverpool though is in the injury department- Konate has only been able to feature in 9 of Leipzig’s 26 Bundesliga games this season and has often struggled with injuries. Reds fans will be wary of adding another talented but injury-prone defender to their books, given the club’s recent experience with Joel Matip.
If the deal does go through, Konate will be the second big name to leave RBL in the summer- Bayern have already announced the signing of fellow defender Dayot Upamecano. Leipzig are currently second in the league and will face the Bavarians in a crunch game after the international break.
