Southampton have begun preparations for life in the top flight by signing striker Jay Rodriguez from Burnley FC. The Saints have paid an undisclosed transfer fee, rumoured to be around £6m, to make the Clarets forward their first signing of the summer. The figure breaks the previous £4m record fee the South Coast outfit paid to land Rory Delap from Derby over a decade back.
Rodriguez, subject of failed bids from Southampton last winter and earlier this summer, has put pen to paper a four year deal at St.Mary’s. He had a good season for Burnley in 2011/12 and was in the Championship’s PFA team of the year.
Southampton were promoted to the 2012/13 edition of the Premier League along with Reading and West Ham United.
