In one of the most unexpected pieces of transfer gossip to surface in the recent past, Sol Campbell is giving serious thought to join League Two side Notts County. The ex-England international who made 73 appearances for the country , now 34, has been offered fresh terms at Fratton Park after falling out of contract this summer, but has decided to make another shock move. Campbell was expected to play abroad when he left Arsenal in 2006 but instead joined Pompey. He also made a very controversial switch from Tottenham to Arsenal in 2001 on a Bosman transfer.
Sol’s switch to Meadow Lane sees him link up with former England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson, who is the Midlands outfit’s director of football. Notts County were taken over by a rich middle-east consortium and have tied up a giant sponsorship deal which would allow them to match Campbell’s £90,000-a-week wage demands. Notts County are also pushing for the signing of Manchester City’s young goalkeeper Kasper Schemeichel. Schemeichel, who is currently on loan at Coventry, would fancy a chance of playing regular football and Notts are making a bid in the region of £500,000 for the goalkeeper.
