Following an inconsistent pre-season, Milan have decided to mutually terminate the contract of 36 year old veteran goalkeeper Zeljko Kalac. New Milan coach Leonardo was unimpressed by Kalac’s progress in the pre-season which prompted him to dump the Australian custodian. Kalac, 36, has been at Milan since 2005 but has made less than 60 appearances for the Italian giants. Kalac was always behind in the pecking order with established keepers like Christian Abbiati and Nelson Dida before him.
The San Siro outfit released a statement on their official website, which read, “AC Milan announce that by consensus, it has decided to terminate the working relationship with the player Zeljko Kalac. We thank him for what he has done for the Rossoneri in the past, and we wish him all the very best for the future.”
And as a stop-gap replacement AC Milan have signed experienced Italian keeper Flavio Roma from Monaco on a one-year deal. Roma made 247 appearances for French club Monaco from 2001-2009 and returns to his homeland to end his career. Roma, at 35 years of age, does little though to reduce the average age of the squad. Roma has signed a deal that lasts till June 2010.
“AC Milan also would like to announce that it has acquired the full rights to Flavio Roma from Monaco, who has signed a contract until June 30 2010.”
