In his bid to become the first Englishman to play in four World Cups, David Beckham has hinted that he would move back to England or more likely to Italy.
The former Real Madrid and Manchester United midfielder, has played in the last three World Cups, leading the national team in the last two. He would enter the history books if he plays in South Africa next year, surpassing England and Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Robson who made it to four World Cup squads but did not play in the 1958 edition.
Beckham is already England’s most-capped outfield player with 113 appearances.
Beckham said: “My career has been incredible. I’ve played in three World Cups, been captain of my country, played for some of the biggest clubs and I’ve enjoyed that.
If we reach another World Cup and I play some part in that, it will be up there with all the other achievements.”
Fabio Capello has consistently stressed on the need for Beckham to play in a major European league to improve his chances of making it to South Africa.
A most likely move for Beckham would be a repeat of last season wherein he could return to AC Milan on loan, once the football season in the US ends in November.
However he insists that he has received offers from three or four big clubs other than AC Milan.
He said: “It’s always good to have options. Milan have made me aware that they want me to go back there, and I’m more than happy with that. But I have other options. Once I have time to decide, I will.”
Beckham was taunted as a ‘part-timer’ by some Galaxy fans after he missed 17 league games at the start of the new MLS season this year completing his loan spell at Milan.
But, with the World Cup due next year, Beckham is intent on playing in a European league and has hinted that he would part his ways with Galaxy if they tried to block his move.
“If it upsets a few people, I can’t do anything about that. I keep saying how much I enjoy playing over there and how committed I am to the Galaxy, but I want to give myself every chance to be involved in the squad.
“I think I’ll be back there after the World Cup. There is a possibility that the contract might break in the autumn, but I’m committed there.”
