Aston Villa have officially confirmed the signing of rising Jamican star Leon Bailey from Bayer Leverkusen. The 23-year-old has moved to the Premier League from the Bundesliga for a reported £25m fee, and has put pen to paper a four-year deal that will keep him at Villa Park till the summer of 2025.
Bailey is Villa’s third major signing of the summer window after Emi Buendia from Norwich and Ashley Young from Inter. His arrival is seen by many as another sign that club captain Jack Grealish’s much-talked-about move to league champions Manchester City is all but done.
Bailey joined Leverkusen from Belgian outfit Genk in 2017 and has made over 150 appearances for them in his time at the Bay Arena. The 20/21 season saw him make 40 appearances across all competitions for the Werkself, and he netted 15 times in those 40 games.
Bailey was also part of Jamaica’s 2021 Gold Cup squad. The Reggae Boyz reached the quarterfinals of the tournament before suffering a narrow defeat to eventual champions USA.
Villa will begin their new season with a trip to Vicarage Road on the 14th and have a friendly against Sevilla this weekend as they continue preparations for the 21/22 campaign.
