According to news reports in O Globo, Chelsea midfielder Deco’s transfer to Brazilian club Fluminense is all but done. The 32 year old Portugal international had a year left on his current Blues contract, but owner Roman Abramovich has agreed to let him leave on a free in order to reduce Chelsea’s huge wage bill.
Deco signed for Chelsea from Barcelona in the summer of 2008 for £8m on a three year contract. He was Luis Felipe Scolari’s first signing at Stamford Bridge, but had an unhappy first year following Scolari’s departure. Over two seasons, he has made a little over 50 appearances for the Blues.
If the transfer does go through, Deco returns to Brazil after a gap of thirteen years. He left Corinthians in 1997 to join Benfica.
Deco has announced that he will be retiring from international football after the 2010 World Cup. Portugal are in the same group as Brazil at the tournament.
