Burnley have officially confirmed the signing of Dutch forward Wout Weghorst. The 29-year-old has moved for a reported £12m transfer fee and has inked a three-and-a-half-year contract at Turf Moor. Weghorst will take the No.9 jersey vacated by Chris Wood’s departure to Newcastle earlier this month.
Weghorst is a proven goal scorer at both Eredivisie and Bundesliga level. Since he joined Wolfsburg back in 2018, only Robert Lewandowski has scored more league goals in the German top flight than Weghorst.
The 6-foot 6-inch striker’s first target will be to ensure Premier League safety for the Clarets, who are bottom of the table at the time of writing, but have games in hand over fellow strugglers Watford, Newcastle and Norwich.
Weghorst started his senior career at Emmen and played for Heracles Almelo and AZ Alkmaar before moving to the Bundesliga in the summer of 2018. He has been capped by Netherlands at international level and was part of their Euro 2020 squad. The Dutch finished the group stages with a 100% record- Weghorst netted against Ukraine as well, but were eliminated in the Round of 16 by the Czech Republic.
Burnley’s next game is against Watford at Turf Moor this weekend.
