Henry moves to the New York Red Bulls

Following the footsteps of former England captain David Beckham, French forward Thierry Henry completed his switch to Major League Soccer side New York Red Bulls. He is reported to have signed a “multi-year” contract with the MLS side. He is expected to make his debut in a friendly against Tottenham on 22 July.

The former Arsenal captain was having a difficult time at Barcelona. Coach Pep Guardiola preferred youngsters like Bojan and Pedro over the 32-year old veteran. Barcelona agreed to let Henry go even with him having one year left on his current contract. Henry moved to Barcelona in 2007 where he played 80 games scoring 35 goals. It was Henry’s controversial handball that secured France’s qualification to the World Cup ahead of Republic of Ireland. Henry had a miserable outing in South Africa though where he played just once.

As expected , Henry waxed eloquent on his new club and said that he was delighted to be a part of Red Bull Soccer family – “I am fully aware of the team’s history and my sole goal during my time here is to help win the club its first championship. Knowing Red Bull’s significant commitment to soccer locally and internationally, I am confident that my team-mates and I will succeed ,” he stated.
