Arsenal have followed up the summer signing Santi Cazorla with that of his compatriot Nacho Monreal on winter transfer deadline day. Monreal has moved from Malaga on a long term deal and will compete with Kieran Gibbs and Andre Santos for the left back spot at the Emirates. Gibbs has been Arsenal’s first choice left back since the departure of Gael Clichy, but the youngster has often struggled with injury and Brazilian defender Santos has not made the jersey his own in the former’s absence.
The fee paid by Arsenal to Malaga was not revealed but rumours have it to be somewhere around the £8.5m mark.
However Monreal is cup tied for Arsenal’s upcoming Champions League clash against Bayern and with Gibbs injured, it means Santos will have to play at left back against the Bavarian giants.
