Aston Villa look towards Owen

In all probability, Michael Owen played his last game for Newcastle United when he came off the bench at Villa Park for the last 20 minutes, in a game that confirmed Newcastle’s relegation to the Championship. With Newcastle looking to shed down their wage bill, Michael Owen will have to look for a better club. Aston Villa have emerged as front runners to sign the injury plagued England striker. Aston Villa have made some shrewd business in the past by signing promising English players at a bargain price. Their interest in Owen does not come as a surprise.

Central defender Curtis Davies said: “I am sure Michael Owen doesn’t need revitalising by any manager. I am sure Michael Owen, if he goes somewhere, keeps fit and plays games, is going to score goals.”

In some other good news for Villa, Stiliyan Petrov put pen to paper on a new deal which sees him at the club till the 2012-13 campaign. The deal to keep current captain Gareth Barry still hangs in the balance. Manchester City and Liverpool are linked with a £12 million swoop for the England midfielder. Villa are also on the lookout for a central defender after Martin Laursen decided to quit football after a spate of horrible knee injuries.
