Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo and Edinson Cavani’s brother Walter Fernando were involved in a war of words after the Uruguayan’s expected transfer to the Wanda Metropolitano failed to materialise by the end of the winter window.
Cavani reportedly had a verbal agreement with Atleti and many expected his switch to be a done deal, but the transfer surprisingly broke down. Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo quoted Cerezo as blaming Cavani’s “relative” for the breakdown in talks, with the latter reportedly wanting an 18 million euro bonus.
Cavani is PSG’s record goal scorer but his contract at the Parc des Princes expires at the end of the current 19/20 season. Fernando refuted Cerezo’s claims, saying that if it was a matter of money, he would’ve attempted to push for a move to the Premier League, where the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United have been linked with the 32-year-old forward.
Cavani’s playing time at PSG has been restricted since the arrival of Mauro Icardi from Inter Milan in the summer. Apart from PSG, he has also represented Danubio in his native Uruguay as well as Palermo and Napoli in Serie A.
