Liverpool winger Ryan Babel wants to secure a loan move to his former club Ajax as he feels that the lack of first team opportunities at Anfield may jeapordise his chances of getting selected in Holland’s squad for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Babel has started just one game for the Reds so far this season and has been dropped after their first week loss to Tottenham Hotspur. After his move to Merseyside in 2007, Babel has underachieved considerably. He has made only 57 appearances over the 3-year time period in all competition scoring just seven times. He has been constantly left on the bench, playing second fiddle to Albert Riera and Yossi Benayoun. With the arrival of Alberto Aquilani at the club, his chances of playing first team football consistently have gone down a notch. Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez also hinted that Babel would need to add new facets to his game to survive in the demanding Premier League.
Babel minced no words while expressing his thoughts-
“There have been a lot of things promised but they haven’t been followed up,” Babel said. “I would get to play for more minutes and have more chances but, after the first defeat, I lost my place,” said Babel.
“Half a season at Ajax with a view to the World Cup wouldn’t be a bad idea. I can add something to their squad. Loaning me out was not an option in the summer. Now we have agreed to review the situation in January.”
