England U-21 centre back Curtis Davies has completed a controversial switch from Aston Villa to Midlands rivals Birmingham City. The 25-year old former WBA stopper has signed a three and a half year deal with Alex McLeish’s club for a fee of around £1.75million, which could eventually rise upto £2.5million. Injury to first choice centre half Scott Dann has left Birmingham vulnerable at the back. The signing of Davies is sure to plug a few holes in the heart of Birmingham’s back four.
Davies was not getting enough playing time at Villa Park with Collins, Dunne, Clark and Cuellar ahead of him in the pecking order. He spent a good part of this season on loan at Leicester City. He had the option of signing permanently with the Foxes but chose to join Birmingham instead.
After completing Davies’ signing, Birmingham have turned their attentions towards former Newcastle forward Obafemi Martins. The Nigerian international is available on loan from his Russian club Rubin Kazan. A fee of £350,000 should be enough to secure a loan deal till the end of the season.
