Newly promoted Premier League outfit Sheffield United have made their first move of the summer by signing Luke Freeman from Queens Park Rangers. The two clubs didn’t disclose the transfer fee, but Freeman is reportedly the Blades’ record signing, eclipsing the £4m they paid to Brentford for John Egan. He has put pen to paper a three-year deal.
United are returning to the top flight after a gap of twelve years, having last featured in the Premier League in 2006/07. They were in League One as recently as 2016-17, but earned two promotions in three seasons- finishing second behind Norwich in the Championship in 2018/19.
The 27-year-old Freeman started his career at Charlton and was signed as a teenager by Arsenal. However his career at the Emirates didn’t quite take off as expected, and he had spells at Yeovil, Stevenage and Bristol City before joining QPR in 2017. He was the R’s player of the season last year, with 8 goals and six assists to his name across all competitions.
Freeman, who can play both as an attacking midfielder or a winger, has been capped by England at youth level. He represented the Three Lions at the U19 European Championships back in 2009.
