Chelsea have officially confirmed the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino as their new manager ahead of the 2023/24 season. The Argentine gaffer returns to the Premier League after a gap of nearly four years- he has previously managed Southampton and Spurs in England.
Chelsea’s 2022/23 season was a disappointment. The club fired Thomas Tuchel early in the campaign, but his successor Graham Potter, brought to Stamford Bridge from Brighton, struggled as well. Potter was then shown the door and Frank Lampard was put in charge as a caretaker boss for the final third of the season, but the midfielder couldn’t turn things around either, only managing one win in his second stint.
Pochettino has signed a two-year contract at the Bridge, with the option for a year’s extension built into the deal. Chelsea finished a lowly 12th in the 22/23 campaign, meaning that there will be no European football whatsoever for the Blues in 23/24.
The Argentine’s achievements at Spurs included taking them to the Champions League final in 2019, which they lost to Liverpool. He then had an eighteen-month stint at Paris Saint-Germain and managed to win both Ligue 1 and the French Cup during his tenure at Parc des Princes.
