Atletico Madrid have reportedly opened talks with Chelsea over a potential loan move for defender Marcos Alonso. The left back has fallen down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge following the arrival of Ben Chilwell from Leicester in the summer, and wasn’t even in the Blues squad for their disappointing London derby defeat against Arsenal over the weekend.
Frank Lampard currently has Chilwell as his first choice with Emerson Palmieri as backup, and is said to be open to the idea of letting Alonso leave. The 30-year-old has been at the Bridge since 2016 and has racked up over 150 appearances across all competitions for them, but no longer appears to be in Lampard’s first team plans. He also made three appearances for Spain during his stint at Chelsea.
Alonso was born in Madrid and a return to the city of his birth would probably be welcomed by the Spaniard. He is a Real Madrid youth product and also had stints at Fiorentina, Bolton Wanderers and Sunderland before joining Chelsea.
Atleti are top of the table in La Liga currently and interestingly, are due to play Chelsea in the Round of 16 of the Champions League when the competition resumes in February.
