Middlesbrough have acquired the services of former Tottenham and Real Madrid defender Jonathan Woodgate as they aim to return to the Premier League. Woodgate was a free agent after being released by Stoke City and has put pen to paper a three year contract with the Riverside, marking his return to the North-East after a gap of nearly half a decade.
Woodgate played for Middlesbrough between 2006 and 2008 before his switch to Spurs. The centre half is Tony Mowbray’s fourth signing of the summer after Grant Leadbitter, Stuart Parnaby and Christian Burgess.
There has been no question regarding Woodgate’s talent, but the 31 year old’s career has been blighted by injuries. However a move to Boro, his home club, could well resurrect his career.
