Wigan Athletic have succeeded in persuading Estudiantes striker Mauro Boselli to join the club in a record £5.8million deal. Wigan chairman Dave Whelan was reluctant to sign the Argentine international but was persuaded by coach Roberto Martinez.
The 25-year old Boselli has scored 32 times in 57 games for his current club and is the all time top scorer in the Copa Libertadores – South American version of the Champions’ League. With the attacking talents at Maradona’s disposal, Boselli missed out on the World Cup squad.
The Lancashire outfit beat a host of clubs from Spain and Germany to his signature. They also had to fend of interest from fellow Premiership clubs – Sunderland and Birmingham City. The fact that the player was part owned by Boca Juniors – his former club added to the complications. Boselli’s arrival could pave the way for Hugo Rodallega’s move to Arsenal.
