Blackburn Rovers midfielder Brett Emerton has opted to return to his native Australia by signing for A-League outfit Sydney FC. Rovers terminated Emerton’s contract a year ahead of schedule by mutual consent and the former Feyenoord star has now put pen to paper a three year deal with Sydney. Emerton, who featured in Blackburn’s 3-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday in the Carling Cup, will link up with his new team mates later as Sydney have given him permission to turn out for Rovers in this weekend’s clash against Everton.
Emerton signing for Sydney comes just days after Melbourne Victory secured a major transfer coup by picking up Harry Kewell.
Emerton is a Sydney lad, born in the city. He started his playing career with Sydney Olympic before leaving to join Feyenoord in 2000.
