League One Club Burton Albion have completed the signing of young midfielder Joe Powell from Premier League outfit West Ham. The 21-year-old, whose contract with the Irons was due to expire at the end of the current season, has inked a two and a half year deal with Burton.
Powell, a product of the Hammers youth academy, wasn’t quite able to break into the senior team like fellow graduate Declan Rice. His solitary appearance for the club came in their 8-0 Cup win over Macclesfield in September 2018. He was also an unused substitute against Leicester the following month but unfortunately didn’t get a single minute of Premier League action at the London Stadium. The quest for regular first team football has taken him to Nigel Clough’s Burton, who are currently sixth in League One. The Brewers’ mid-week game against MK Dons came too soon for Powell but he could make his debut when Burton host Accrington Stanley in 10 days’ time.
Powell had a stint on loan at Northampton Town last season and signed a one-year extension to his West Ham contract earlier this summer. He is Burton’s second signing of the winter window after defender Conor Shaughnessy, who has joined on loan from Leeds.
