Newly appointed Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce has made his first signing of the summer at St.James Park in the form of young Brazilian striker Joelinton. The 22 year old has inked a six year deal with the Magpies, and the £40m Newcastle have paid for him is a transfer record for the club, eclipsing the £20m they paid for Miguel Almiron earlier this year.
Joelinton started his career with Sport Recife in his native Brazil before making the switch to Europe with Hoffenheim in 2015 on a five year contract. He was loaned out to Austrian club Rapid Vienna for two seasons before returning to Germany last year.
The Brazilian scored 11 goals across all competitions for Hoffenheim in the 2018/19 season, with seven of them coming in the Bundesliga. He’s a versatile player, having featured on both flanks as well as a striker during his stint at the Rhein Neckar Arena. Newcastle were in the market for a forward following the departures of Salomon Rondon and Ayoze Perez to Dalian and Leicester respectively.
Joelinton will wear the No.9 jersey, made famous by the likes of Alan Shearer, for the upcoming 2019-20 season.
