Borussia Dortmund have announced the signing of Thomas Meunier from Paris Saint-Germain. The Belgian international has moved on a free transfer and has put pen to paper a four-year deal which will keep him at the Westfalenstadion till the end of the 2023/24 season.
Meunier started his professional career with Virton and Club Brugge in his native Belgium before sealing a big money switch to Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2016 for 7 million euros. Like his new BVB contract, Meunier’s PSG deal was also for a period of four seasons.
Meunier was a key part of the Belgian side that finished third at the World Cup two years ago. He was unfortunately suspended for their semi-final loss to eventual winners France, but returned to score against England as the Red Devils won their third-place playoff.
The 28-year-old was linked with several Premier League clubs as it became increasingly evident that his deal at Parc des Princes would not be extended, but has chosen to continue his career on the continent.
Meunier’s arrival also puts a question mark over the future of Achraf Hakimi. The Moroccan international, on loan from Real Madrid, is currently BVB’s first choice right back and they are keen on re-signing him, but the 21-year old apparently has his eyes set on breaking into the first team at the Bernabeu.
