Former England defender Sol Campbell is set to return to former club Arsenal in a shock move. The 35 year-old has been training with his former club after leaving Notts County after just one game in League Two. The former Portsmouth defender will sign a six month deal at the Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal are looking for cover for first choice central defensive duo William Gallas and Thomas Vermaelen. The only other centre back in Arsene Wenger’s squad is Philippe Senderos, but the Swiss international is out-of-favour at the club and is expected to leave the club before the transfer window shuts at the end of the month.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger told Sky Sports News: “I have seen him in training and he is very sharp,”
“His attitude is good, his talent is good. But it is the game which decides. It gives us the opportunity to have one more centre-back. Sol will give us experience, good advice and physically he has worked very hard.
The move is a major boost for Campbell, who had previously been in limbo. It gives him a another chance to play in the Premier League and a chance to relaunch his career in the top flight.
