Carlisle United have secured the signing of winger Jon-Paul McGovern on a free transfer. McGovern will officially move to the Cumbrians from his current club Swindon Town on July 1, 2011. He has signed a two year contract with Carlisle United.
McGovern, a former Celtic trainee, has spent nearly four years with Swindon after joining the Robins from Milton Keynes Dons in 2007. He has played for both Sheffield clubs- United and Wednesday, and also had a short spell at Livingston.
Swindon were relegated to League Two at the end of the 10/11 season. McGovern was expected to initially join Sheffield United, where former Robins boss Danny Wilson has taken charge of affairs, but chose Carlisle in the end as the Cumbrians are situated closer to his native Scotland.
