Chelsea have agreed a deal with Barcelona for youngster Oriol Romeu, the club have announced. The highly rated 19 year old is currently on U20 duty with Spain but is expected to undergo a medical at Chelsea and finalise personal terms soon. The fee agreed between the two clubs was not announced, but reports estimate it to be around £5m.
Barca signed Romeu as a teenager from Espanyol and he has developed into one of their brightest upcoming talents. Romeu is primarily a defensive midfielder and new Chelsea boss Andre Villas Boas feels he can provide adequate cover in that position for injury prone Ghanaian international Michael Essien. He can also play in central defence if required.
