According to reports in Spain, Chilean star Alexis Sanchez is desperate to leave Manchester United and has “offered himself” to La Liga giants Real Madrid. Sanchez, who turns 30 next month, joined United in January this year in a swap deal that saw Henrikh Mkhitaryan move to the Emirates Stadium.
However the Chilean has been a shadow of his former self, only managing three league goals for United in his near 11 month tenure despite pocketing more than £300,000 a week in wages at the club. He did not start in the Red Devils’ 3-1 loss to derby rivals City over the weekend.
Sanchez is also said to be unsettled at Old Trafford, counting only the club’s Spanish speaking contingent among his mates, and is keen for a move down to the Spanish capital. Should the move materialize, he will be among the few high profile footballers to have played for both Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Mourinho and Sanchez are said to at loggerheads with each other, and United can free some serious space on their wage bill if they let go of the Chilean.
Real will definitely be in the market for a striker following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo but whether they’d be able to match Sanchez’s wage demands, especially given his poor form this year and his age, is another question altogether.
