Championship heavyweights Cardiff city have completed £4 million signing of striker Michael Chopra from Sunderland. Chopra, who was on loan at Cardiff from January, has now signed a three-year contract with the Bluebirds. Chopra becomes the third player to sign permanently for Cardiff this season after the signings of Anthony Gerrard from Walsall and Mark Hudson from Charlton Athletic.
The £4 million deal for Chopra is a club record for the maximum transfer fee paid for a signing. It is more than twice the previous record of £1.7 million that the club paid Stoke City for striker Peter Thorne in September 2001.
This is Chopra’s second spell with Cardiff City. In 2006-07, Chopra had moved to Cardiff from Newcastle United and had notched up an impressive 22 goals in 42 games. His success with Cardiff saw him make a £5 million move to Premiership club Sunderland where he struggled to make his mark scoring just eight times in 39 appearances. He had loan spells at Cardiff in 2008 and 2009 before signing permanently.
I, like all the other lads, am excited and determined to go that extra mile to gain promotion. We are all putting in 110% in training and there is a good feeling within the squad.
