Danish defender Andreas Christensen has hinted at a possible exit from Chelsea if his lack of playing time continues. The 22 year old was a regular under previous Blues boss Antonio Conte, making 40 appearances across all competitions in the 2017/18 season. He even inked a new contract in January this year, putting pen to paper a four and a half year deal that would keep him at Stamford Bridge till the end of the 2021/22 season.
However, with Maurizio Sarri taking over the reigns at the Bridge over the summer and preferring a formation that requires only two central defenders, Christensen’s playing time has decreased tremendously. He has made only three appearances for the Blues this season- 2 in the Europa League Cup and one in the EFL Cup, and is yet to play in the Premier League for them. Even worse, he didn’t even make the match day squad for their last three league games against West Ham, Liverpool and Southampton respectively.
Christensen admitted his frustration in an interview to Danish paper BT, and hinted at an exit either in the winter, or next summer, if things didn’t improve. At this moment, Chelsea have three other central defenders- the first choice pair of David Luiz and Antonio Rudiger, and veteran Gary Cahill, who, like Christensen, has also made his unhappiness regarding the lack of game time known, and is widely expected to move on at the end of the season.
