If reports from Argentina are to be believed, Manchester City are said to be very interested in signing River Plate star Lucas Martinez Quarta. The 23-year-old defender is highly regarded in his native Argentina, and earned his first senior cap for the Albiceleste in September last year.
City are looking at Quarta as a potential long term solution for their centre-back problem that’s been a real headache for manager Pep Guardiola at times this season. The Citizens are reportedly interested in a potential swap deal that will see veteran Nicolas Otamendi move the other way.
Quarta allegedly has a £19m release clause in his contract and is not short on suitors, with the likes of Dortmund, Ajax, Valencia and Real Madrid all keeping tabs on his progress.
A stumbling block for City could be their potential absence from the Champions League next season which would make a move to the Etihad less attractive for Quarta. However they do have a fairly big Spanish speaking contingent, which could make Quarta’s transition to English football that much easier.
Quarta, a Copa Libertadores winner with River Plate two years ago, is contracted to his club till the summer of 2021.
