Manchester City midfielder David Silva has opted for a return to his native Spain by signing for Real Sociedad on a free transfer. The 34-year-old has inked a two season deal with Los Txuri-Urdin which will cover the 2020/21 and 2021/22 campaigns.
Silva was widely linked with a switch to Lazio, with the Serie A outfit having reportedly offered him a three-year deal, but the move broke down and he has instead opted to return to La Liga after a gap of a decade, having originally joined City from Valencia in the summer of 2010. Lazio have not taken kindly to the news, and their sporting director Igli Tare issued a statement saying he “had respect for the player, but not the man”
Silva’s last appearance for City was in their 3-1 Champions League quarterfinal loss to Lyon, and he leaves the club as their most capped Premier League player. He also holds the record for most Premier League assists in a City jersey and won 13 titles during his stay at the Etihad Stadium.
Real Sociedad finished 6th in La Liga in the 2019/20 campaign, thus securing an automatic spot in the group stages of the 20/21 Europa League.
