League One Carlisle United have officially announced the signing of young defender James Tavernier on loan from Newcastle United. The versatile youngster, who can play as both full back and centre half, will be with the Cumbrians for an initial one month period.
Tavernier, a product of the Leeds youth system, joined Newcastle in 2008. He had a one month loan stint at Gateshead in January this year that was extended by another two months. The 19 year old’s only Magpies appearance so far has come in a League Cup tie against Accrington Stanley.
Carlisle boss Greg Abbott moved quickly to sign Tavernier, following an injury to Franklin Simek, who is expected to be out for an indefinite duration following hip damage in their opening game of the season against Notts County.
