Borussia Dortmund have moved to complete the signing of midfielder Emre Can on loan from Juventus. The 26-year-old German international was keen to secure more regular playing time ahead of Euro 2020 after falling down the picking order in Turin, with the likes of Pjanic, Rabiot, Bentancur and Rabiot all present as competition at the Serie A giants.
The move is initially a loan switch till the end of the 2019/20 season, with BVB having an option to make the deal permanent for 25 million euros. The transfer brings Can back to his native Germany after nearly six seasons- he used to play for Bayer Leverkusen before leaving them for Liverpool in 2014.
Dortmund were looking for defensive reinforcements following Julian Weigl’s sale to SL Benfica, and Can, who can play both as a defensive midfielder and a centre back, fits the bill.
When Can originally joined Juve, Massimiliano Allegri was originally in charge of the Bianconeri. His appearances however became restricted when Max Allegri stepped in as manager- he managed only eight of them in the current league season and was not named in Juve’s original Champions League squad.
Can has 25 caps for the German national team but failed to make it to their 2018 World Cup squad.
