According to reports, Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has targeted Declan Rice as a key signing for the Blues this summer. Interestingly though, Lampard sees Rice as a future centre-back, rather than as a defensive midfielder where he’s primarily played for West Ham.
Rice is a product of the Chelsea youth system, and is good friends with Mason Mount, who managed to make it through the ranks at Stamford Bridge while Rice had to search for an alternative route after being released by the Blues
The 21-year-old Rice can play at centre-back- he did so against Wolves recently, and several pundits are of the opinion that it could end up being his best long term position. A central defensive role could see Rice being likened to Blues legend John Terry, who currently coaches at Aston Villa.
West Ham are likely to demand around £45m for their prize asset, but a lot will depend on whether they stay up or go down. The Hammers’ chances were significantly helped by a 3-2 win over Chelsea a few days ago.
David Moyes is also interested in bringing Ross Barkley to the London Stadium, having previously worked with him at Everton. That also introduces the possibility of a Rice-Barkley swap, should both clubs and players be open to the idea.
