Grimsby Town have completed the signing of Falkirk born midfielder Derek Niven on a free transfer. The 28 year old Scot was on the lookout for a new club after leaving Chesterfield at the end of the 11/12 season and Grimsby have moved quickly to make him their sixth signing of the current summer window after Greg Pearson, Aswad Thomas, Sam Hatton, Joe Colbeck and Andy Cook.
Niven, one of Chesterfield’s longest serving players ( he has made over 300 appearances for the club), originally started his career with Raith Rovers and then signed for Bolton Wanderers before making the move to Chesterfield. He was loaned out by the Spireites to Northampton Town last season after struggling to get game time
