Arsenal have officially announced the signing of Jorginho from London rivals Chelsea. The Italian midfielder has moved to the Gunners for a fee around the £12m mark, and has put pen to paper an eighteen-month deal, with the possibility of a further year’s extension built into the contract.
The 31-year-old Jorginho has been at Chelsea since 2018 and was in the last six months of his contract at Stamford Bridge. He started his career at Hellas Verona and had a short stint on loan at Sambonifacese before joining Napoli in 2014. He was also part of the Italian side that won Euro 2020 by beating England on penalties in the final at Wembley.
Arsenal’s original target had been Brighton’s Caicedo, but that didn’t work out, forcing the Gunners to look at other options. Jorginho will wear the No.20 jersey at Arsenal and could make his debut this weekend when Mikel Arteta’s side travel to Goodison Park to take on Everton.
The Gunners also confirmed the departures of three first-team members on loan on deadline day, with Brazilian Marquinhos moving to Championship side Norwich, defender Cedric Soares joining Fulham and young Belgian medio Albert Sambi-Lokonga leaving for Crystal Palace.
