West Ham have officially confirmed the departure of Italian forward Gianluca Scamacca to Atalanta. The transfer fee wasn’t announced, but is expected to be around the £27m mark, inclusive of add-ons.
The move sees Scamacca return to his native Italy just a year after joining the Hammers from Sassuolo. His first season saw him make 27 appearances for the London outfit across all competitions, with eight goals to his name. Only three of those eight came in the Premier League, where he made 16 appearances.
Atalanta finished fifth in Serie A last season, enough to earn them qualification for the Europa League. They had a bright start to the campaign, but faded away as the season progressed, and eventually finished six points behind AC Milan, who took the final Champions League spot on offer.
The Serie A outfit have sold Rasmus Hojlund to Manchester United and Jeremie Boga to Nice this summer, but have bolstered their attack with the signings of Scamacca and El Bilal Toure, with the latter having arrived from Almeria two weeks ago.
Atalanta’s first fixture for 23/24 is against Scamacca’s old club Sassuolo away from home. That will be followed by another trip to Fiorentina before they play their first home game against Monza.
