According to reports, West Ham have identified veteran Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud as a possible target for the winter transfer window. The Hammers are desperate for attacking reinforcements, and Giroud, a proven Premier League scorer who has fallen down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge, fits the bill.
The French forward is also keen for regular first team football ahead of the European Championships next summer, which could also end up as his swansong for Les Bleus. West Ham have mainly used Sebastien Haller and Michail Antonio upfront this season but the former has struggled to find the back of the net regularly and the latter has had plenty of injury problems.
The 34-year-old Giroud joined Chelsea from London rivals Arsenal in the winter of 2018. His contract at the Bridge is due to expire at the end of the current 2020/21 campaign, and Chelsea might prefer to let him go on a free in the summer rather than let him leave in the middle of a tough campaign.
Giroud, who has been capped over a hundred times by France, didn’t feature at all in Chelsea’s recent 3-0 win over the Hammers. Tammy Abraham, who started ahead of him, netted twice for the Blues in their win at the Bridge.
