West Ham United have completed the signing of Irish midfielder Joey O’Brien on a free transfer. O’Brien was a free agent after being released by Bolton Wanderers at the end of the 10/11 season and had spent the last few weeks training with the Hammers. He now becomes West Ham’s fourth signing of the summer after Kevin Nolan, Abdoulaye Faye and Matt Taylor.
O’Brien started his career with Bolton and has been with the Trotters since 2004. However his career at the Reebok Stadium has been hampered by injuries. He has also had two loan spells with Sheffield Wednesday.
O’Brien has been capped three times by the Republic of Ireland but has never played for the national team under new manager Giovani Trapattoni.
