Rumours in Spain have linked Gonzalo Higuain with a switch to North London this summer, with the Argentine striker set to swap the Bernabeu for the Emirates Stadium. The rumours have gained traction after Real general manager Jose Angel Sanchez was quoted as saying that the club would keep Karim Benzema, but allow Higuain to quit and sign two additional strikers in the summer.
Arsenal are believed to be the frontrunners for Higuain, although Tottenham and Man City have also expressed interest. Higuain is believed to cost more than £20m, which would represent a significant investment for both the Gunners and the Lilywhites.
Higuain is not the only striker to be linked with the Gunners, with Fiorentina’s Stefan Jovetic and Saint Etienne’s Gabonese forward Pierre-Emrick Aubameyang also said to interest Arsene Wenger. Any incoming transfers would probably see both Nicklas Bendtner and Marouane Chamakh make permanent exits from the Emirates, with the future of Olivier Giroud also looking increasingly in doubt after a poor season.
Arsenal are in pole position to pip Spurs to a spot in the Champions League next season, which would give them some serious leverage over their bitter rivals if the two are to be involved in a tussle for Higuain.
