Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant has agreed to join Portsmouth on loan till the end of the season. Pennant, who celebrated his 26th birthday on January 15, is a free agent in the summer, and has made only two Premier League appearances for Liverpool after a fallout with manager Rafa Benitez.
Wigan Athletic were also interested in signing Pennant, who had earlier turned down an offer to move to Real Madrid. Pennant had joined Liverpool from Birmingham City in July 2006 for £6.7 million.
The move is a well thought out one. Pennant is guaranteed first team football at Fratton Park, and if he performs well, it will raise his value at the end of this season. Pennant has also stated his desire to stay at Anfield and fight for a spot in the starting XI, but that looks unlikely given his current relationship with Benitez.
Pennant is expected to make his debut in Pompey’s FA Cup game against Swansea this Saturday.
