Liverpool have officially announced the signing of promising youngster Fabio Carvalho on a five-year-contract. The teenager will join the Reds on July 1 following the expiry of his current deal with Fulham. The Reds will pay the Cottagers £5m, potentially rising to £7.7m with add-ons, and the deal also includes a 20% sell-on clause.
Jurgen Klopp was interested in signing the Portuguese starlet back in January, but a deal didn’t quite materialise in the winter window. Due to his tender age and transfer regulations involving British clubs, Liverpool couldn’t sign him on a free, and opted to work out a deal with Fulham in order to prevent the case from going to a compensation tribunal.
The 19-year-old Carvalho made 38 appearances across all competitions for Fulham in 2021/22, helping the Cottagers win promotion as Championship winners. He had 11 goals and 8 assists to his name.
A former England youth representative at U16, U17 and U18 levels, Carvalho has chosen to shift allegiances to the country of his birth and played for Portugal U21 earlier this year.
Liverpool won both the FA and League Cups in 2021/22 and finished a close second to Manchester City in the league. They will also play Real Madrid in the final of the Champions League later this week.
